Skyrim Minecraft Crossover: New Mash-Up DLC

Skyrim Minecraft 1Earlier this week Bethesda announced that a new Skyrim-themed expansion pack would be made available for the Minecraft: Xbox 360 edition. An exact release date hasn’t been revealed, but the Skyrim Mash-Up pack is expected to cost $3.99, with a free trial version to be made available before purchase.

This Skyrim Minecraft crossover is interesting, and somewhat unexpected. Two years ago Bethesda took legal action against Mojang, the developers of Minecraft, for copyright infringement of their Scrolls trademark. The lawsuit was settled amicably, and apparently there are no hurt feelings between the two companies. In fact, Bethesda had only good things to say in their announcement blog post: As fans of Minecraft, we’re very excited to be working with Mojang, Microsoft, 4J, and Notch to make this happen. Obviously, this is great news for gamers.

Skyrim Minecraft 2The new Skyrim Mash-Up pack will change the look of Minecraft by replacing default textures, skins, etc. A unique Skyrim Minecraft crossover is certain to appeal to fans of both games, and will contain the following features:

  1. Skyrim world generating the familiar landscapes of Whiterun, Riverwood, and Bleak Falls Barrow.
  2. Skyrim music featuring 20 original tracks, including the classic Dragonborn.
  3. Skyrim texture set to apply to Minecraft worlds (both new and existing).
  4. Skyrim menus and user interface to give Minecraft a whole new look.
  5. Skyrim character skins for in-game avatars, including a male and female version of the Dragonborn and 38 others (see table for complete list).

While the Skyrim Mash-Up announcement was only specific to the Xbox 360, it’s not inconceivable to think that a Skyrim Minecraft crossover will be made available for PC and Playstation gamers at a future date. However, there has been no official word on this.

Game system notwithstanding, what is your opinion on this recent announcement? Do you think that a Skyrim Minecraft crossover is a good idea, and would this make you want to play Minecraft if you don’t already do so? Honestly? It’s a disappointment. The only major locations I found were Riverwood, Bleak Falls Barrow, Whiterun, and the Western watchtower. If I’m missing something, feel free to correct me.
